Stop the Senseless Slaughter of Badgers!

BTB CONSULTATION

The Badger Trust rejects the proposals contained in the Government’s consultation paper (published  September 15). They lack scientific credibility and far from easing the current bovine TB situation they could –as the ISG demonstrated—make matters worse.

The suggestion that farmers and landowners might be licensed to shoot free-running badgers is unacceptable. Shooting badgers at night is likely to be inhumane, inefficient and potentially dangerous to all wildlife and to the public.

We recognise that bovine TB is a major issue. But these proposals do nothing to resolve a complex problem which has its roots in the way cattle are managed and tested.

The Welsh Assembly Government is consulting on proposed legislation for badger culling as part of a programme to eradicate bovine TB in cattle in an Intensive Action Area in a defined part of West Wales.  The Consultation started on 20th September 2010 and ends on 17th December 2010.  To read about it, click here

Badger Trust will shortly issue guidance notes similar to those already provided for the Consultation document issued by Defra.

HIGH PROFILE SUPPORT

Dr. Brian May and the Save-Me campaign have offered to support Badger Trust in the fight to prove that culling badgers will not eradicate bovine TB. Brian said "I am very honoured to join in this battle with you. On the side of what is right!".

A major new report published yesterday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the United States' premier scientific journal, has revealed that cattle rapidly spread bovine TB to badgers[1].

Is it right to Cull Welsh Badgers - to make way for Welsh Cows ?
Or to kill Cornish Badgers to make way for Cornish Cows ?

Limited Badger Cull ?

Article to Eastern Daily Press (as yet unpublished).

Efra announces: that a limited cull of badgers would be allowed, demonstrates clearly that badgers have no votes. As most people would not want to eat badgers, then I suppose cows win, especially as farmers have opposable thumbs and can put an X on the ballot paper. What our government have failed to put across to the unwashed masses is whether badgers pass on TB to cows, or vice versa. Cotswolds farmer Dick Roper, of Eastington Farm, deduced that maize, a common cattle food, was low in vital immune system boosting selenium, and might be the reason his cattle were suffering with TB. He placed pots of mineral-rich licks outside badger setts on his land, and also changed over to organic farming, feeding his cows clover. While his neighbours still have TB, he has been TB free for 5 years. Surely no coincidence! Why will the government not tell us why they stopped publishing vitamin & mineral analyses of our food in 1990? As cattle on the IOM have TB, in the absence of badgers, why should we throw the baby out with the bath water? Who's Fault is it ?

 - Maize - Deficiencies - The Cause

As the government's chief scientist leads calls for the slaughter of badgers to eradicate bovine TB, a farmer has discovered a potential link with cattle fodder. So why is nobody checking out his hunch? Chris Baker reports

"Have we as farmers accidentally introduced a completely new diet to the badger that has dropped its immune system over the edge? We know it does it for cattle. We know we have to supplement the cattle. But nobody is [providing supplements] for the badger."

Badgers Love Maize Too!

SOLUTION =  Feed Cows Properly, and provide Badger with mineral supplements

Roper admits that all this is no more than a hunch. He says: "All I have done is treat my badgers the same way as I would treat my cattle - nothing more than that - to try to make sure the diet is supplemented and their health is maintained."

Care Don't Cull

Beef Consumers - As long as this cull is operative - You are part of the problem !!

If farmers don't treat nature with respect - lets give up on their Beef. Then they might listen.
